Retrofitting and Upgrading Existing Buildings

FORTRESS specializes in strengthening and modifying existing structures to enhance safety, providing protection against the full range of hazardous events.

Before and after FORTRESS building upgrades

Building Upgrades and Structural Enhancements

We reinforce existing buildings with structural improvements to increase blast, fire, toxic and impact resistance. Often, strengthening aspects of a building can increase its structural capacity to a point where buildings can continue to be occupied in an industrial setting. Whether this involves adding mass to walls or strengthening a roofing system, we have the ability to provide both the design and construction services.

Toxic Refuge and Shelter-In-Place Design

  • FORTRESS specializes in the design and installation of toxic refuges and shelter-in-place rooms, creating secure, airtight environments.
  • We convert designated areas of buildings into fire and toxic shelter-in-place / safe havens through a range of potential mitigations such as , sealing penetrations, installing fire resistant and leak tight doors and windows, isolating HVAC ducts and installing breathing air systems. These modifications, along with many other potential building improvements, help maintain a controlled and secure environment in the event of a fire or toxic gas release.
  • These enclosures feature advanced gas detection systems, positive pressure control, and integrated air filtration to protect against hazardous materials and chemical exposure during emergencies.

Blast resistant door assembly

Blast Door, Fire Door, and Blast Window Replacements

We equip existing structures with specialized blast-resistant doors and windows engineered to withstand a range of pressures as well as other hazards such as fires and impacts while maintaining structural integrity.

Protective Barriers and Enclosures

FORTRESS engineers high-performance protective barriers that mitigate the impact of explosions, fires and high-velocity debris impacts.

Fire Walls

FORTRESS fire walls are engineered to contain and mitigate smaller thermal hazards, reducing heat transfer and providing critical time for evacuation. While fire walls enhance safety, they are not typically suitable for shelter-in-place applications. Proper fire wall design should be based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to account for fire behavior and blast loading, providing optimal protection in high-risk environments. Built with reinforced materials, FORTRESS fire walls are designed to withstand prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures without structural failure.

Blast Walls

These walls are meticulously designed to absorb and redirect blast energy, effectively mitigating the impact of the blast wave. Proper design is essential—improperly designed walls can allow blast waves to “roll over” the top, applying dangerous loads to the protected structure. FORTRESS utilizes advanced engineering methods, including computational blast modeling and material analysis, to ensure optimal height, thickness and material selection for each site-specific application. Built with reinforced concrete, our blast walls provide durable, reliable protection tailored to specific threat levels and operational requirements.

Protective Enclosure FORTRESS

Protective Enclosures

FORTRESS enclosures are designed to contain high-energy fragments and mitigate hazards originating from within a structure, such as high pressure testing, battery abuse testing, flywheel containment systems, and many more. Constructed with reinforced concrete walls, base and roof, these enclosures are engineered to withstand the hazards generated by the equipment within the structure.

Steel rebar reinforcement enhances structural integrity, allowing the enclosure to absorb and dissipate kinetic energy from ejected debris. For additional safety, linings or barriers can be installed on interior walls to reduce the impact of secondary projectiles. Ventilation and access points, if required, can be designed with protective grates or blast-resistant doors to maintain containment integrity. These enclosures ensure that personnel and critical equipment outside the impact zone remain protected—even in worst-case scenarios.

Safe Escape Routes & Heat Shielding

In high-risk environments, safe evacuation routes and thermal protection can be life-saving. FORTRESS designs blast- and heat-conscious escape pathways that guide personnel from danger to safety, while our high-performance heat shields — developed with Locker Group — minimize thermal hazards without sacrificing ventilation or durability. Independently tested to withstand extreme heat, wind, and snow, these shields install quickly and keep safe exits clear and reliable when it matters most.

Mobile Protective Solutions

When permanent structures aren’t practical, FORTRESS delivers upgraded mobile and temporary buildings that meet rigorous safety standards. We retrofit modular units and wood trailers with blast-resistant materials, reinforced entryways, and overpressure resistance up to 2+ psi. The result: flexible, cost-effective protection for petrochemical sites, military operations, and remote work locations — without compromising safety where it matters most.
